Cullen Lovin’ Part 5: Carlisle and Esme

21 02 2010

At long, long last…I didn’t have time to look up all the quotes I wanted, but I know you guys know the books well enough to know what I’m talking about 🙂

1. Carlisle is the role model that kept Edward from killing Bella in the beginning.

“For one short second, I was able to think clearly. In that precious second, I saw two faces in my head, side by side.

One was mind, or rather had been: the red-eyed monster that had killed so many people that I’d stop counting their numbers. Rationalized, justified murders. A killer of killers, a killer of other, less powerful monsters. It wa s a god complex, I acknowledged that – deciding who deserved a death sentence. It was a compromise with myeslf. I had fed on human blood, but only by the loosest definion. My victims were, in their various dark pastimes, barely more human than I was.

The other face was Carlisle’s.

There was no resemblance between the two faces. They were bright day and blackest night…

In a few moments, there would be nothing left in me that would reflect the years I’d spent with my creator, my mentor, my father in all the ways that counted. My eyes would glow red as a devil’s; all likeness would be lost forever.

In my head, Carlisle’s kind eyes did not judge me. I knew that he would fogive me this horrible act that I would do. Because he loved me. Because he thought I was better than I was. And he would still love me, even as I now proved him wrong…

I would prove my father wrong about me. The misery of this fact hurt almost as much as the fire in my throat.” –Edward, Midnight Sun, Ch. 1 (I think)

2. Carlisle gives Esme Isle Esme, which she in turn loans Edward & Bella for their honeymoon.

And we all know what happened there 😉

“Who gives an island as a gift? I frowned. I hadn’t realized Edward’s extreme generosity was a learned behavior.” — Bella, Breaking Dawn, Ch. 5

3. Esma is their “vampire mother hen,” as Jake calls her.

“I snorted. Vampire mother hen – bizarre.” –Jake, Breaking Dawn, Ch. 14

4. Carlisle is the epitome of all that is good. Even the wolves have to admit it.

“If there was such a thing as a safe vampire, it was the strangely gentle leader.” –Jake, Breaking Dawn, Ch. 9

5. Esme loves her adopted children unconditionally.

“She would be for any plan that kept her family intact. Her first priority would not be rightness, but me.” –Edward, about Esme, in Midnight Sun

6. And she keeps them honest when they’re playing ball.

7. Carlisle wouldn’t act to save himself in Breaking Dawn because he wouldn’t want to hurt the wolves.

“Carlisle Cullen. Looking at him without that hate clouding my eyes, I couldn’t deny that killing him was murder. He was good. Good as any human we protected. Maybe better. The others, too, I supposed, but I didn’t feel as strongly about them. I didn’t know them as well. It was Carlisle who would hate fighting back, even to save his own life. That’s why we would be able to kill him – because he wouldn’t want us, his enemies, to die. This was wrong. And it wasn’t just because killing Bella felt like suicide.” –Jake, Breaking Dawn, Ch. 10

8. Carlisle keeps the peace between Rose & Edward – no mean feat at times.

“But I was no longer worried about Rose. I could see that she would go along with Carlisle’s decision, no matter how infuriated she was with me.” –Edward, Midnight Sun, Ch. 4 (I think)

9. Carlisle saved Edward, rather than letting him die of the Spanish Influenza.

And we all owe him BIG for that one.

10. Carlisle didn’t give into “peer pressure” to eat humans when he was living with the Volturi.

11. Carlisle offered Bree the chance to surrender in Eclipse.

As Edward says, only Carlisle would think to offer.

12. Carlisle must have done something right to be able to call in all those favors for witnesses in Breaking Dawn.

13. “If Carlisle was the soul of our family, then Esme was the heart. He gave us a leader who deserved following; she made that following into an act of love.” –Edward, Midnight Sun

I hope you enjoyed! Comment and tell what you love about the heads of the Cullen family 🙂

Reasons to Love Rosalie Hale

I know, I know…you may be thinking “Rosalie?! Seriously?! Wtf?!” and a week or so ago, I would have said the same thing. Buuuuuut I recently had a discussion on twitter with jacndaniel, who actually made me realize that Rose is basically awesome in her own, very unique way. And now I’d like to share that revelation with you.

1. She saved Nessie.

I admire Rose’s tenacity in protecting the baby, despite the overwhelming resistance from the rest of the family. I think that, yes, the baby was important to her, but she also thought Bella deserved the right to make her own choice – a choice Rose knew what it felt like to have taken away from her.

2. She shows the most growth over the course of the series (aside from Bella and Edward, of course).

I really like Bella and Rose’s developing bond over the whole series. Their antagonism in Twilight, the sort of boiling point of their relationship in New Moon, Rose’s realization of how much Bella means to her brother, and the acceptance that comes with that, her explanation and promise to be on her best behavior in Eclipse, and finally their joining forces to save Nessie’s life in Breaking Dawn. Imagine what would have happened if Bella hadn’t had Rose.

3. She truly loves her family (and her brother, our boy Edward).

Here’s the conversation debating this point that resulted in this post:

jacndaniel: “Rose loves everyone to a fault, she can love them enough to tell them what she really thinks. Her fierceness translates 2 bitch but she’s not. She’s harsh with everything she does, but she’s not malicious. She tells Bella the reason 4 her feelings and it makes sense, even to Bella.   So I love Rose for her willingness to protest her family at all costs, her feirceness, and her love.”

Me: “I can see what you’re saying. Have you read the New Moon extra from her point-of-view on Stephenie’s website? That’s what made me really start dislike her. She just seems so selfish and self-absorbed that she didn’t care what kind of pain she was inflicting on Edward. :-(” (there’s another link to the extra I mentioned later in this post)

jacndaniel: “i know, but also she wanted him to come home.clean break like wut edward tried to do w/bella. w/my bro i mite do the same? fierce love again.”

Me: “You have a point – she def loves Edward. I feel like she evolves past some of her initial selfishness over the course of the series too. Like she tells Bella, she hated her because Edward wanted her instead of Rose, but then she got over that and had a legitimate reason to think she was making a mistake. And treating lightly the things Rose wanted most.”

jacndaniel: “See!You’re gettin it!Rose is harsh&selfish at times, but she’s not bad&her core she is all love 4 her fam&Bella. She saved Renesmee after all!”

Me: “That’s true! If it weren’t for Rose, they wouldn’t have had Nessie and Jake would still be suffering. I’d never thought of that – I’d only thought about Rose using Bella as a human incubator, but she *was* right in the end. Hmmm, I think you may have won me over 🙂 I’ll def have to show her some Cullen-Lovin’! There’s a poll on my site now where you can vote for her. I love these kinds of Twi discussions :-)”

 4. Like Emmett, she tears down houses…*ahem*

“You gonna back down so easy, little sister? Not much wild about you, is there? I bet that cottage doesn’t have a scratch. Did Edward tell you how many houses Rose and I smashed?” –Emmett, Breaking Dawn, Chapter 26

5. In New Moon, she shows real remorse for what almost happened to Edward and Bella.

“I’m so very sorry, Bella. I feel wretched about every part of this, and so grateful that you were brave enough to go save my brother after what I did. Please say you’ll forgive me.” –Rosalie, New Moon, Chapter 22

There’s a New Moon extra on Stephenie’s website from Rose’s point-of-view that really gives you insight into her character.

6. She also wants to go to Volterra to save him.

“No, you can’t.” Alice’s voice dropped till it was nearly inaudible, though I was sitting inches from her. Contrarily, I listened harder. “Tell Emmett no…Well, go after Emmett and Rosalie and bring them back…Think about it, Jasper. If he sees any of us, what do you think he will do?” (New Moon, Chapter 19)

7. There’s gotta be something worth loving in the girl, if Emmett loves her 🙂

8. She votes no (Someone had to. Besides Edward.)

“I don’t mean that I have any aversion to you as a sister. It’s just that… this is not the life I would have chosen for myself. I wish there had been someone there to vote no for me.” –Rosalie, New Moon, Chapter 24

And she had a legit reason to do it:

“You already have everything. You have a whole life ahead of you — everything I want. And you’re going to just throw it away. Can’t you see that I’d trade everything I have to be you? You have the choice that I didn’t have, and you’re choosing wrong!” –Rosalie, Eclipse, Chapter 7

“You don’t want to be rash about permanent things, Bella.” –Rosalie, Eclipse, Chapter 7

9. She has a soft side, even if it’s buried waaaaaay deep down.

“I know you’re frustrated that he’s keeping you locked up like this, but don’t give him too bad a time when he gets back. He loves you more than you know. It terrifies him to be away from you.” –Rosalie, Eclipse, Chapter 7

10. She has a tough past, which makes it a little easier to understand why she is the way she is.

After reading chapter 7 of Eclipse, you had to feel for the girl.

11. She’s a pretty kickass assassin and got some sweet revenge on her jackass fiance and his friends. Girl power, baby.

“Every mortal goes to sleep with the chance of never waking up,. The others would expect us to clean up after ourselves. Technically, that would make it Edward’s job, but this is obviously beyond him. You know I’m capable of control. I would leave no evidence behind me.”

“Yes, Rosalie, we all know how proficient an assassin you are,” I snarled. (Edward, Midnight Sun, Chapter 4)

“I saved Royce for last. I hoped that he wold hear of his friends’ deaths and understand, know what was coming for him. I hoped the fear wold make the end worse for him. I thnk it worked. He was hiding inside a windowless room behind a door as thick as a bank vault’s, guarded outside by armed men, when I caught up with him.” — Rosalie, Eclipse, Chapter 7

Come on, she even wore a wedding dress. Evil genius.

“I was overly thearical. It was kind of childish, really. I wore a wedding dress I’d stolen for the occasion. He screamed when he saw me. He screamed a lot that night.” –Rosalie, Eclipse, Chaper 7

12. She also has self-control rivaling that of Carlisle.

She killed those 7 men without drinking their blood. Come on, she’s killed fewer people than ESME.

“You know, my record is almost as clean as Carlisle’s. Better than Esme. A thousand times better than Edward. I’ve never tasted human blood.” –Rose, Eclipse, Chapter 7

And when she nearly slipped up during the birth scene in Breaking Dawn, like Jake says, she wanted them to win – she didn’t put up one ounce of a fight.

“And then Rosalie lost her focus. I saw the expressionon her face shift, saw her lips pull back from her teeth and her black eyes glint with thirst.

“No, Rose!” Edward roared, but his hands were trapped, trying to prop Bella upright so she could breathe.

I launched myself at Rosalie, jumping across the table without bothering to phase. As I hit her stone boy, knocking her toward the door, I felt the scalpel in her hand stab deep into my left arm. My right palm smashed against her face, locking her jaw and blocking her airways.

I used my grip on Rosalie’s face to swing her body out so that I could land a solid kick in her gut; it was like kicking concrete. She flew into the door frame, buckling one side of it. The little spaker in her ear crackled into pieces. Then Alice was there, yanking her by the throat to get her into the hall.

And I had to give it to Blondie — she didn’t put up a ounce of fight. She wanted us to win. She let me trash her like that, to save Bella. Well, to save the thing.” (Jake, Breaking Dawn, Chapter 18)

Yeah, SnarkyMcSnarkerstein thinks it was to save “the thing,” and I’m sure part of it was, but I also think it was to save Bella. They’d bonded.

13. She does pretty well living among all those boys. Emmett’s gotta be a handful 😉

Alice is kind of one of the guys, and Esme isn’t all that present. So that just leaves poor Rose. Until Bella and Nessie come along, that is.

14. She saved Emmett.

“It was only two years later that she found Emmett. She was hunting — we were in Appalachia at the time — and found a bear about to finish him off. She carried him back to Carlisle, more than a hundred miles, afraid she wouldn’t be able to do it herself. I’m only beginning to guess how difficult that journey was for her…She saw something in his face that made her strong enough. And they’ve been together ever since.” –Edward, Twilight, Chapter 14

15. Her battles with Jake in Breaking Dawn are EPIC.

Two words: Blonde jokes.

“You know how you drown a blonde, Rosalie? Glue a mirror to the bottom of a pool.” –Jake, Breaking Dawn, Chapter 14

“Hey, do you know what you call a blonde with a brain? A golden retriever.” –Jake, Breaking Dawn, Chapter 15

“S’not so hard to erase a blonde’s memory. Just blow in her ear.” –Jake, Breaking Dawn, Chapter 15

Plus, the dog bowl thing was just plain hilarious.

“Enjoy, mongrel.” —Rose, Breaking Dawn, Chapter 15

“It had once probably been a big mixing bowl, but she’d bent the bowl back in on itself until it was shaped almost exactly like a dog dish. I had to be impressed with her quick craftsmanship. And her attention to detail. She’d scratched the word Fido into the side. Excellent handwriting.” –Jake, Breaking Dawn, Chapter 15

“Silently, I lifted my doggy bowl off the floor. Then, with a quick, powerful flip of my wrist, I threw it into the back of Blondie’s head so hard that – with an earsplitting bang – it smashed flat before it ricocheted across the room and snapped the round top piece off the thick newel post at the foot of the stairs.” –Jake, Breaking Dawn, Chapter 15

“You. Got. Food. In. My. Hair.” —Rose, Breaking Dawn, Chapter 15 (Rose will be Rose)

“Where’s the flood, mutt?” —Rose, Breaking Dawn, Chapter 14

“About time. The chainsaw impersonation was getting a little tired.” —Rose, Breaking Dawn, Chapter 14

“Oh, wonderful. I knew I smelled something nasty.” –Rose, Breaking Dawn, Chapter 15

“Ew. Someone put the dog out.” —Rose, Breaking Dawn, Chapter 16

Rose has her faults, but don’t we all?

Cullen Lovin’ Part 3: Emmett Cullen

6 11 2009

13 Days!!!

New Moon Quote-of-the-day: “Emmett, Edward’s playful bear of a brother, I did miss. He was in many ways just like the big brother I’d always wanted… only much, much more terrifying.” –Bella, Chapter 1 (Fitting, no?)

Reasons to Love Emmett Cullen

1. He’s like a giant, hard-as-a-rock, strong-as-hell teddy bear.

“SHEESH, EDWARD! GET A GRIP! Emmett shouted at me in his head. His hand came down on my shoulder, holding me in my seat before I could jump to my feet. He rarely used his full strength — there was rarey a need, for he was so much stronger than any vampire any of us had ever encountered — but he used it now. He gripped my arm, rather than pushing me down. If he’d been pushing, the chair under me would have collapsed.” (Midnight Sun, Chapter 3)

“If you’ve ever seen a bear attack on television, you should be able to visualize Emmett hunting.” –Edward, Midnight Sun, Chapter 11

2. He’s the big brother we all wish we had.

“Rosalie was a pain, but I would always owe her one for choosing Emmett; no one had a better brother than mine.” –Edward, Midnight Sun, Chaper 12

He’s teasing…

“You haven’t changed at all. I expected a perceptible difference, but here you are, red-faced just like always.” –Emmett, New Moon, Chapter 1

“You’re monopolizing the bride. Let me dance with my little sister. This could be my last chance to make her blush.” –Emmett, Breaking Dawn, Chapter 4

“Maybe you’re not as scary as you think you are,” Emmett said, chuckling. “I bet I could have frightened her better than that.” –Emmett, Midnight Sun, Chapter 2

He’s protective…

“Rosalie and Emmett led the way, Emmett looking ridiculously like a bodyguard in the middle of hostile territory.” — Edward, Midnight Sun, Chapter 2

He’s playful…

“Emmett and Jasper were not above taking advantage of my distraction to bombard me with slushballs.” –Edward, Midnight Sun, Chapter 2

“”Human, you say?” Emmett asked.

He held up his right fist, twisting his fingers to reveal the snowball he’d saved in his palm. Of course it had not melted there. He’d squeezed it into a lumpy block of ice. He had his eyes on Jasper, but I saw the direction of his thoughts. So did Alice, of course. When he abruptly hurled the ice chunk at her, she flicked it away with a casual flutetter of her fingers. The ice rococheted across the length of the careteria, too fast to be visible to human eyes, and shattered with a sharp crack against the brick wall. The brick cracked, too….

“Very human, Emmett,” Rosalie said scathingly. “Why don’t you punch through the wall while you’re at it?”

“It would look more impressive if you did it, baby,”” (Midnight Sun, Chapter 2)

He acts like a 2-year-old sometimes…

“I heard Emmett grumble. He always got frustrated when Alice and I had these kinds of conversations.” –Edward, Midnight Sun, Chapter 4

“Oh, hey Edward!” he shouted back, grinning and waving at me. The bear took advantage of his distraction to rake its heavy paw across Emmett’s chest. The sharp claws shredded through his shirt, and squealed across his skin. The bear bellowed at the high-pitched noise. Aw hell, Rose gave me this shirt! Emmett roared back at the enraged animal.” (Midnight Sun, Chapter 7)

“”A few minutes later, Emmett jogged over to where I was waiting for him. His shirt was destroyed, torn and bloodied, sticky with sap and covered in fur. His dark curly hair wasn’t in much better shape, He had a huge grin on his face.

“That was a strong one. I could almost feel it when h clawed me.”

“You’re such a child, Emmett.”” (Midnight Sun, Chapter 7)

 3. He’s competitive as hell and more than a little feisty.

“Aw, what a waste. And here you’re probably the one person who could take him – since he can’t get in your head to cheat – and you had a perfect excuse, too. I’ve been dying to see how he’d do without that advantage.” –Emmett (to Bella), Breaking Dawn, Chapter 22

“I’m not going down without a fight.” –-Emmett, Breaking Dawn, Chapter 29

“Emmett was fuming over a wrestling match he’d lost to Jasper during the night. It would take all his limited patience to make it to the end of the school day to orchestrate a rematch. I never really felt intrusive hearing Emmett’s thoughts, because he never thought one thing that he would not say aloud or put into action.” –Edward, Midnight Sun, Chapter 1

“We all hated gym, Emmett especially. Throwing games was an affont to his pesonal philosophy.” –Edward, Midnight Sun, Chapter 11

4. The boy knows how to make a dirty innuendo.

‘Bout time somebody scored around here.” –Emmett, Breaking Dawn, Chapter 25

“I’m sure you’ll ace your classes… apparently there’s nothing interesting for you to do at night besides study.” –Emmett (to Bella), Breaking Dawn, Chapter 25

5. In the throes of passion, he tears down houses.

You know you wanna tap that.

“So it’s still standing? I would’ve thought you two had knocked it to rubble by now. What were you doing last night? Discussing the national debt?” –Emmett, Breaking Dawn, Chapter 25

“You gonna back down so easy, little sister? Not much wild about you, is there? I bet that cottage doesn’t have a scratch. Did Edward tell you how many houses Rose and I smashed?” –Emmett, Breaking Dawn, Chapter 26

6. The entirety of Midnight Sun.

There’s also an Twilight outtake on Steph’s site that has a hilarious Emmett moment.

7. Nothing ever bothers Emmett.

“As we walked in, Emmett ambled through the kitchen door, seeming perfectly at ease. Nothing ever bothered Emmett.” –Bella, Eclipse, Chapter 12

“”Ease up, Edward,” Emmett said. “Honestly. So you kill one human. That’s hardly the end of the world.

“You would know,” I murmured.

Emmett laughed. “You’ve got to learn to get over things. Like I do. Eternity is a long time to wallow in guilt.””  (Midnight Sun, Chapter 2)

“What’s the big deal?” Emmett disagred. “Either he will or he won’t kill her. Might as well get it over with, either way.” (Midnight Sun, Chapter 5)

“Emmett didn’t hold grudges, and I probably ought to be more grateful for his easy going nature.” -Edward, Midnight Sun, Chapter 3

“I’ll say,” Emmett agree. His voice was still close to laughter. Trust Emmett to find the joke in the destruction of my life.” –Edward, Midight Sun, Chapter 4

8. He loves his wife, no matter how crazy she acts (We’ll be showing some Rosalie love tomorrow ;-))

“Emmett and Rosaie were oblivious, having another of their moments, gazng into each others’ eyes with wonder — it was ather disgusing to watch from the outside.” –Edward Midnight Sun, Chapter 3

9. He’s hilarious.

“I’m really glad Edward didn’t kill you. Everything’s so much more fun with you around.” –Emmett, Eclipse, Chapter 4

“Nice to have toddlers guarding the fort.” –Emmett (about Jake and Seth), Breaking Dawn, Chapter 11

“Damn, kid, you’re a mess, Emmett added, sympathy in his tone.”  Midnight Sun, Chapter 3

“Who are you and what the hell have you done with my brother?” —Emmett (to Edward), Midnight Sun, Chapter 12

10. Have you SEEN Kellan Lutz?!?!?!

They could not have possibly gotten a better Emmett. And he’s hott. That’s right – with 2 t’s.

kellan

And he’s hilarious (just like Emmett):

Well, there’s some Emmett Cullen-Lovin’ for your drooling pleasure 😉 What did I miss? Tell me in the comments! Come back tomorrow for some Rosalie Hale Cullen-Lovin’!

Cullen Lovin’ Part 2: Jasper Hale

5 11 2009

14 Days!!!

New Moon Quote-of-the-Day: “Attention is never a good thing, as any other accident-prone klutz would agree. No one wants a spotlight when they’re likely to fall on their face.” –Bella, Chapter 1

UPDATE: Here is a handy-dandy New Moon promo interviews TV guide!

Reasons to Love Jasper Hale

1. His nickname is Jazz. And that’s just awesome.

2. He can feel and contol your emotions.

Really, how awesome is that? Who hasn’t wished their boyfriend knew how they felt? With Jazz, it’s a reality 😉 And as long as he uses the emotion control thing for good and not evil, we’re set.

““And Jasper making you feel all warm and fuzzy about spilling your guts, don’t forget that.” — Bella, Twilight, Chapter 15

“You know how Jasper is – he can’t resist a good emotional climate. You’re so happy all the time, love, he gravitates toward you without thinking.” –Edward, Breaking Dawn, Chapter 27

3. He’s a good Southern gentleman.

“And you ducked your head, like a good Southern gentleman, and said, ‘I’m sorry, ma’am.'” –Alice, Eclipse, Chapter 13

4. He was a solder.

To quote an unrelated TV show: “Men are weak. Except for soldiers. Soldiers are sexy.” –Edna, Everwood

Who doesn’t love a man in uniform?

5. He has one badass history. See Eclipse Chapter 13.

“Jasper shows up, covered in battle scars, towing this little freak who greets them all by name, knows everything about them, and wants to know which room she can move into.” –Edward, Eclipse, Chapter 13

“It was hard to take my eyes off his ravaged neck and jaw — hard to believe that even a vampire could have survived so many sets of teeth ripping into his throat.

Instinctively, I tensed to defend myself. Any vampire who saw Jasper would have had the same reaction. The scars were like a lighted billboard. Dangerous, they screamed. How many vampires had tried to kill Jasper? Hundreds? Thousands? The same number that had died in the attempt.” –Bella, Breaking Dawn, Chapter 20

Who doesn’t love the bad boy?

6. But he’s also an overprotective fool. (Like someone else we know. Aww.)

“Overprotective fool.” — Alice (about Jasper, after he tried to keep her from having anyone to fight in the battle and ended up getting bitten), Eclipse, Chapter 25

7. He fights his thirst and suffers every day, for his love, Alice.

“After a century of instant gratification, I found self-discipline… challenging.” –Jasper, Eclipse, Chapter 13

“You held out your hand, and I took it without stopping to make sense of what I was doing. For the first time in almost a century, I felt hope.” –Jasper (To Alice), Eclipse, Chapter 13

8. He’s also just plain hella sweet.

“I can feel what you’re feeling now — and you are worth it.” –Jasper (To Bella), Twilight, Chapter 19

9. Jackson Rathbone and 100 Monkeys are basically pure awesome.

It doesn’t so much matter what he’s saying, but the boy’s voice is a panty-dropper:

And the baseball scene with the Jasper’s epic single line of the whole movie (Skip to 4:42 if you just want to hear the line without watching the whole clip):

Cullen Lovin’ Part 1: Alice Cullen

4 11 2009

15 days!!!!

New Moon Quote-of-the-Day: “You’re not asleep, and you’re not dead. I’m here, and I love you. I have always loved you, and I will always love you. I was thinking of you, seeing your face in my mind, every second that I was away. When I told you that I didn’t want you, it was the very blackest kind of blasphemy.” –Edward, Chapter 23

The people have spoken – they love Alice, Jasper and Emmett equally! I intended to do all 3 in one post, but once I got started, I realized there was so much to love about each of them that they each deserved their own post! So, come back tomorrow for the Jasper installment of the Cullen Lovin’ series, followed by Emmett, then Rose, and then the rest of the Cullen Coven!

Reasons to Love Alice Cullen

1. No brainer – she can see the future.

“Some things are more certain than others… like the weather. People are harder. I only see the course they’re on while they’re on it. Once they change their minds — make a new decision, no matter how small — the whole future shifts.” (Twilight, Chapter 22)

2. She is one of the only Cullens that can contend with Edward and his mind-reading. Case in point: The epic chess game.

“Edward and Alice playing chess was one of the funniest things I’d ever seen. They’d sat there nearly motionless, staring at the board, while Alice foresaw the moves he would make and he picked the moves she would make in return out of her head. They played most of the game in their minds; I think they’d each moved two pawns when Alice suddenly flicked her king over and surrendered. It took all of three minutes.” (Eclipse, Chapter 2)

Also, there was the rock-paper-scissors match in Breaking Dawn.

Alice: “I know – I’ll play you for it. Rock, paper, scissors.”

Edward: “Why don’t you just tell me who wins?”

Alice: “I do. Excellent.” (Chapter 24)

Need I say more?

3. She doesn’t have a problem with felonies.

Three words: Grand theft auto.

Alice: “How strongly are you opposed to grand theft auto?” (New Moon, Chapter 19)

And she kidnapped Bella, held her hostage and tortured her.

Bella: “I have been tortured — Alice painted my toenails.” (Eclipse, Chapter 6)

Alice: “This hostage stuff is fun.” (Eclipse, Chapter 6)

4. She drives the coolest Cullen car. (In my very un-car-knowledgeable opinion. To quote Bella: “I don’t speak Car and Driver.” Twilight, Chapter 11)

Porsche 911 Turbo

Alice: “And speaking of Italy and sports cars that I stole there, you still owe me a yellow Porsche.” (Eclipse, Chapter 2)

4. In Eclipse, we get to see her ninja battle skills. The scene describing Jasper trying to catch her is basically amazing.

“Though I kne that Jasper would never allow any harm to come to Alice, it was still hard to watch as he sank back into a crouch facing her. Alice stood motionlessly, looking tiny as a doll after Emmett, smiling to herself. Jasper shifted forward, then slinked to her left.

Alice closed her eyes.

My heard thumped unevenly as Jasper stalked toward where Alice stood.

Jasper sprang, disappearing. Suddenly he was on the other side of Alice. She didn’t ppear to have moved.

Jasper wheeled and launched himself at her again, only to land in a crouch behind her like the first time; all the while Alice stood smiling with her eyes closed.

I watched Alice more carefully now.

She was moving — I’d just been missing it, distracted by Jasper’s atacks. She took a small step forward at the exact second tat Jasper’s body flew through the spot where she’d just been standing. She took another step, while Jasper’s grasping hands whistled past where her waist had been.

Jasper closed in, and Alice began to move faster. She was dancing — spiraling and twisting and curling in on herself. Jasper was her partner, lunging, reaching through her graceful patterns, never touching her, like every movement was choreographed. Finally, Alice laughed.

Out of nowhere she was perched on Jasper’s back, her lips at his neck.

“Gotcha,” she said, and kissed his throat.

Jasper chuckled, shaking his head. “You truly are one frightening little monster.”” (Chapter 18)

5. She saved the day in Breaking Dawn (along with Bella) with that brilliant plan that I only fully understood after reading Breaking Dawn the second time.

6. The girl knows how to throw a party.

“He held the door for me, keeping his arm securely around my waist. I stood frozen there for a minute, then I slowly shook me head.

“Unbelievable.”

Edward shrugged. “Alice will be Alice.”

The interior of the Cullens’ home had been transformed into a nightclub — the kind that didn’t often exist in real life, only on TV.” (Eclipse, Chapter 17)

7. She says things like “It sounded like you were having Bella for lunch, and we came to see if you would share.” (Twilight, Chapter 16)

8. She’s one fly vampire (yes I said “fly” like it’s the 90s).

Alice’s prom dress from Twilight, according to Stephenie Meyer’s website:

Alice Prom Dress

“I clutched at the pale silk that covered my skin, panicking again, while an insignificant part of my mind note taht Alice must have dressed me.” –Bella (Breaking Dawn, Chapter 20)

All quotes said by Alice:

“You don’t have anything like this. For crying out loud, you only own one skirt!” (Eclipse, Chapter 16)

“No one dressed by me ever looks like an idiot.” (Breaking Dawn, Chapter 1)

“You’ll be my sister officially in ten short hours… it’s about time you get over this aversion to new clothes.” (Breaking Dawn, Chapter 3)

“Her fashion sense hasn’t improved as much as her balance.” (Breaking Dawn, Chapter 21)

“But look at how she’s dressed. It’s been killing me all day. That is clearly the priority.” (Breaking Dawn, Chapter 24)

“Look at you! You need me to show you how to use your closet.” (Breaking Dawn, Chapter 25)

9. She helps Jasper cheat at chess with Emmett. Cause really, what’s more fun than beating Emmett at anything (be it arm-wrestling or bear-catchng :-))

“Emmett and Jasper were in the middle of an elaborate game of chess, utilizing eight joined boards — sperad out along the glassback wall — and their own complicated set of rules. They would let m play; only Alicew ould play games with me anymore…

Alice leaned her head around the wall after a moment ad started mouthing Emmet’s next moves — Emmett sat on the floor wth his back to her — to Jasper, who kept his expression very smooth as he cut off Emmett’s favorite knight.” (Midnight Sun, Chapter 7)

There you have them, some of my top reasons for loving the frightening little monster. Alice is awesome. After Edward, I think she is definitely my favorite Cullen. So what about you? What do you love about Alice that I left out?
